Hawaiian Shell News
January 1960 - December 1986 (New Series 1 - 324)
Publication of the Hawaiian Malacological Society
AVAILABILITY: Only one set
DESCRIPTION:A complete 26 year run; 312 issues; this set encompasses Volume VIII, No.1 and No. 2, which are the final two mimeographed format issues from November and December 1959, and then the start of the New Series #1 (Volume VIII, No.3) through #324 (Volume XXXIV, No.12). The multiple numbering system is confusing, but the format and layout of the publication makes for easy organization. The entire stack weighs over 25 lbs., and will be shipped as Printed Matter through the U.S. Post Office to U.S. addresses. Special shipping arrangements will have to be made for an overseas orders of this publication.
CONDITION: The October 1962 issue is a high quality 2-sided photocopy; and the years 1964 through 1965 have a few issues with holes punched for a three-ring looseleaf binder. Otherwise the condition is excellent. A few pencil notes appear in the margins, adding to the information and historical value of this set.
NOTES: Hawaiian Shell News (HSN) is a most valuable resource for information about mollusks for the conchologist. HSN became the defacto standard for keeping collectors informed about news in the world of shell collecting during the latter half of the twentieth century. It is undoubtedly the most important shell club newsletter published for collectors in modern times. This set includes the first slick issue after moving away from its original mimeographed format in 1960. Much of the information is still useful and valid. It is also a historical treasure-trove of almost 50 years of stories and information about conchology. The printed edition of HSN ceased publication in January 1997 and has since been an Internet publication. There are thousands of black & white and color pictures with articles covering just about every conceivable aspect of shell collecting, especially discoveries of new species and rare shell finds.
