Spondylus gussoniSpondylus gussoni daCosta, 1829 - Italy, 20-22mm - not all Spondylus have spines. S. gussoni varies considerably in shape, but never develops more than a few wavy lamellae on the lower valve. Spondylus imperialisSpondylus imperialis Chenu - Philippines, 108mm longest dimension spine to spine; an elegant species with spines projecting at 30-40 degree angles from the valves of the shell. Spondylus linguaefelisSpondylus linguaefelis Sowerby - Hawaii, 100mm; purple is one of the more common color forms; the species is found in a variety of color forms, some very rare; the delicate, needle-like spines are characteristic of the Hawaiian specimens.
Spondylus linguaefelisSpondylus linguaefelis Sowerby - Philippines, 94mm X 108mm; yellow is an extremely rare color form in the genus Spondylus; it is especially rare for S. linguaefelis; some call this species S. multimuricatus Reeve, 1856.
