« Pedinogyra hayii (Griffith & Pidgeon, 1833)
The ACAVIDAE are mostly large pulmonate land shells with a general distribution centering in the Indian Ocean from East Africa through Sri Lanka, and Australia. The Acavids show their greatest diveristy in Madagascar, which is home to many large and unusually shaped species in the genera Ampelita, Helicophanta, and Clavator. The Family also includes the colorful Acavus from Sri Lanka, and the oddly shaped Pedinogyra from Australia. Occasionally the Australian Acavids are classified in the Family Caryodidae, but a more widely accepted classification for these Aussy Acavids is in the Subfamily Caryodinae, Family Acavidae.
LITERATURE: Acavidae Iconography is a new monograph dealing with the Family, exclusive of the Ampelita and related genera. It is the first time an illustrated monograph has been published for the Family in almost 100 years.
